Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used for thousands of years. It involves the insertion of five needles to specific Acupuncture points in the body.
Traditional Chinese Acupuncturists believe that there is an energy flow on our body which can become stagnant and manifest itself as physical pain. By needling certain points it can improve the flow of endorphins restoring balance to the body.
At The Newry Clinic however we have been trained in Acupuncture from a Western approach to pain relief. Research has shown that needling specific points can cause the release of natural painkillers (endorphins) within the body as well as stimulating blood flow around the painful area.
It can be used for any painful area and in our experience the most successful conditions treated include:
- Trapped nerves
- Acute Whiplash
- Dead legs
- Tennis Elbow
All our practicing therapists have been trained by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and perform the treatment using sterile needles and hygienic conditions.
Is it safe?
Acupuncture, when performed carefully and appropriately is a very safe form of treatment, occasionally a small bruise or spot of blood develops or a feeling of light headiness may occur but will settle quickly.
There are some clinical conditions such as epilepsy which may restrict acupuncture as a treatment option but the therapist will be aware of any contraindications after a thorough history taking.
